SHADES OF BLACK: The Origins of Colour Consciousness in the Caribbean

£15.00

How colour consciousness in the Caribbean has affected immigrants, and issues of race, in Britain

This book describes how colour consciousness has shaped the experience of Caribbean immigrants to Britain. Clifford Hill is a sociologist and founder of Issachar Ministries, https://www.issacharministries.co.uk. Alton Bell is himself a Caribbean immigrant who currently chairs the Movement for Justice and Reconciliation, https://www.mjr-uk.com. Nigel Pocock is a social scientist and theologian. There is a foreword by Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury.

Dr Hill pastored churches in London’s East End for years, where his home was known as the Jamaican Labour Exchange. This book is in part a memoir of his experiences in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as sociological analysis. The Revd Alton Bell describes the ‘colour pyramid’ and practice of ‘passing’ which affected relationships and families who came to Britain from the Caribbean.
